2014 Participation Guidelines:

 

Step 1: Read the Proceedings Book ASAP

  • Download a copy of the Proceedings Booklet and choose a category. All the rules for your category are in the Proceedings Booklet. It is especially important to read the Objectives of the Science Fair Convention.

Step 2: Submit Your Notification of Participation by March 31, 2014

  • Fill out our online notification form to secure your spot as a participant. Your notification of participation must include:
  1. Your project title.
  2. A brief description of your project.
  3. Your contact information (name/address/phone/email).
  4. Your project category (see Proceedings Booklet, below).
  5. A description of how your project will meet "The Objectives" of the Science Fair.
  6. The number of participants conducting your project (single or group entry).
  7. Your age category (kindergarten, and elementary [grades k-5], middle school [grades 6 - 8], high school [grades 9 - 12], adult [high school graduate OR over 18 years of age]). Please Note: Homeschoolers can choose an age category based on the appropriate level of mastery. Families are also welcome to enter a single project in the group category. 


Step 3: Submit Your Project Papers and Payment by April 21, 2014

  • Project Paper - As per the judges request: a copy of the participant's Project Papers must be submitted prior to the actual science fair for the judges to review. Please Note: Not all project categories require a finished paper (please refer to the Proceedings Booklet below). Your Project Papers must be sent to Cindy Julius via e-mail (cindyjulius@akronfossils.com), fax (330-665-4548) or postal mail (Akron Fossils & Science Center Attn: Cindy Julius 2080 S. Cleveland-Massillon Rd. Copley, OH 44321).
  • Payment - Individual Entries $20, Group Project  $35,  Maximum per family $50.  Payments can be made online with the PayPal "ad to cart" button on this page (akronfossils.com/sciencefair) or over the telephone with a Visa, MasterCard or Discover card by calling the Akron Fossils & Science Center at (330) 665-DINO (3466) Tuesday - Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. Checks can be mailed to the museum and must be made payable to "Akron Fossils & Science Center."

Step 4: Present Your Project to Judges at the Convention on Saturday, May 3th, 2014

  • Project Set Up - Setup will be between 10 and 11:30 am. 
  • Judging - Judging will begin at noon. All participants are required to give a summary of their project to the judges and be able to answer the judges' questions. Select projects will remain at the museum for public viewing until the following Saturday (May 10, 2014).
  • Adult Presentations - Adult presenters will be in the main hall, "Sanderson Lecture Hall." Adults will be scheduled for specific time slots during the day and their presentations will be open to the general public. "Best of Show" in the Adult Category will be asked to repeat their presentation at the evening awards ceremony.
  • Awards Ceremony - The awards ceremony will begin with a presentation by the overall winner in the adult category at 6:30 pm. Prizes and award certificates for all other winners will follow.

2014 Entry Categories

Each project must fall into one of the categories below and exemplify one of the science fair’s Objectives. Detailed rules for each category are in the Proceedings Booklet.

  • Experiments - Operational Science
  • Data Assessment – Historical Research
  • Data Collections - Research Compilation
  • Data Representation – Communicating Science

2014 Objectives

The objective of this science fair is to honor the Creator by acknowledging and giving witness to the presence of design in the created world, by seeking to continually discover and appreciate the fundamental laws of the universe which He set in place, and by bringing to light the data consistent with a history of both man and the earth that is revealed in the Scriptures.  Secondly, this science fair is for the purpose of encouraging and showcasing clearly presented and accurately explored scientific inquiries that have met this objective.

2014 Prizes

Each project will be judged on its ability to excel in criteria applicable to its category.  A first, second and third place prize will be presented as well as certificates of participation.  Please note: group entries will receive one group prize. Prizes awarded last year included Creation Museum tickets, Akron Zoo tickets, DVDs, games, books, and toys.
